An insight look as to how the future of HALO and other big video game adaptations depends on the Prince of Persia.

Move over spidey and supey, make way for the virtual reality super-heroes

Where the hell is "Hollywood" heading?

Over the years, we have been treated with many "games-to-film adaptations". Although not all of them were a complete half-arsed effort, although some on the other hand made us feel- "Is this where Hollywood is heading? I mean, was this the industry that gave us "The Godfather"? Even If you tend to ask your selves these questions, one thing is for certain, that Hollywood is running out of ideas and that to for the right reason. I mean, lets be honest, how many times do we want see another "Government conspiracy flick" or a "genetically enhanced clone falling in love" kind of movies. The answer is that we are tired, you are tired and anybody who doesn't want to see the same old hat-trick performed by a magician in a circus, is also tired.

Is "video games" the right place to look at?
So where does Hollywood look for inspiration? Is it fantasy Novels? No I think, we have already seen enough "Potter" movies till date and god knows how many are to go. The obvious answer seems to be the new medium which has become extremely popular in the span of 6 years. The "Video Game Industry"
That’s where Hollywood seems to be heading for now but due to the reluctance of known film-makers in taking on video-game adaptations, we are yet to see any such movie get critical acclaim or perform wonderfully at the box-office. From the list of movies made, I would say the tomb raider series and the resident evil series are the only movies that would stand above the lot. Not because they were well made, but due to fact that they had a slightly better cast and at least some half-arsed effort was put into them. In recent times, Silent hill flick had got many hopes high, because of the fact that the source material was very powerful in terms of story and atmosphere and the fact that known director Christophe Gans was directing it. Also the screenplay was penned by noted screenwriter Roger Avary. But then, I guess it was too good to be true.

"Silent Hill" could have been so much more.......

Even though Christopher Gans was directing it and Roger Avary penning the script for the movie, was not quite enough to get it up there with the critics and the movie-goers alike

I won't say that I felt sorry for "Silent hill". It was a decent movie, the only problem was that it was taking it self too seriously. I say, that If the critics for once were looking for something artistic in it, then they probably need a career change. I mean common guys, this is a video game adaptation, not Shakespeare's Hamlet. It was what it was. A decent movie based on a decent video game. That’s all. What silent hill needed was a story that could reach to a wider audience, you know, for those who have not played the game. I think that’s where the movie failed. Even though it could have been so much more, it certainly was a foot in the right direction.

The "Prince" is in the right hands...... but then so was Master Chief

The "Bay-Bruckheimer" alliance means that this "Prince" will surely be as big as they come.

Back in 2004, when It was announced that the rights to the Prince of Persia movie were nabbed by none other that Jerry Bruckheimer, a lot of people had become hopeful of the franchise's big-screen appearance, and that too for the right reason. Jerry Bruckheimer is an ace producer who has countless hit movies and TV shows under his belt. Besides that Bruckheimer has teamed up with Michael Bay in the past to bring you such movies as Bad Boys I and II, The Rock, Pearl Harbor and Armageddon. Yes, that's right, Michael Bay is directing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for a Summer '09 release. The portion of people who find this a big news, solely depends on the fact that how many people like Bay's style of filming (for which he is not that popular for). I mean , who here wants to see chariots and horses exploding, ten folds into sky?
Please raise your hands. Yep...... I see some hands. That's good 'cause that is exactly what Bay's version of Prince should be. A kick a***, over the top ride with a summer blockbuster kindish feel to it.
So how are HALO and Prince connected? You might ask. Well the success of the Prince will definitely mean that studios will be willing to invest in game adaptations and so the budget wouldn't be that big of a issue, like it was in HALO's case, which was backed by Peter Jackson and WETA was doing the CGI for it. The studios backed out in 2006 over budget concerns and the project was officially put on hold and thus ending the Master Chief's dream of finishing the fight on the big-screen

Will Master Chief get to finish the fight....... on the big screen?

Rest assured and mark your calendars for the summer 2009 release of Prince Of Persia. 'Cause if Bay-Bruckheimer pull this one off, then we are bound to see justice happen to quality game franchises (all the world's pun intented towards Mr. UWE BOLL)
